How to build a reading habit with KTool and Kindle

An unread article list tells you what you saved. It doesn't tell you when you will read it. If your list keeps growing, try attaching a small amount of reading to a time you already have available.

You could start with one essay after lunch, twice a week. That is a suggested routine, not a target you need to meet. Pick something you can try on an ordinary busy day.

Prepare the next session

Create a Custom Magazine for the subject you want to read about. Add a few articles through KTool, put the one you most want to finish first, and deliver the magazine before your reading session.

Keep this first selection small. A magazine with three pieces about a question you care about gives you a clear place to start. A collection of every interesting link you have saved this year leaves the choosing until later.

If you prefer a fixed schedule, Weekly Read can collect articles and arrive on the day you choose in magazine settings.

Count finished reading yourself

KTool's History page records deliveries. It does not measure your reading time or know when you finish a document on Kindle.

If you want a record, keep a short list in a notebook or notes app. Write the article title and one sentence about why it was worth reading. For research, keep the original URL too, so you can return to the source later.

You may find that counting sessions is more useful than counting pages. A short technical explanation can take longer to understand than several pages of an interview. Choose a measure that matches the reading you are doing.

Adjust the queue before raising the goal

After a week, look at what you left unread. Was the first article too long for the time available? Did you send subjects you felt you ought to read rather than ones you wanted to understand?

Move a long piece to a weekend session. Drop an article that no longer interests you. If an automatic feed supplies more than you can use, reduce the sources before increasing your reading target.

For your next session, choose the opening article in advance and make sure the document has downloaded to your Kindle. You can then sit down and begin at the paragraph you meant to read.
